French military vehicles drive off a US amphibious ship during the multinational exercise "Bold Alligator" in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in January 2012. The exercise was an example of interoperability in action. Partnerships are important for the overall effectiveness of the Alliance. Each NATO nation has its own way of conducting operations, but the interoperability challenges are met through observation, data collection and analysis during bilateral and multilateral exercises. Such exercises are used by NATO to help build better capabilities for the future.

NATO has also developed a network of structured partnerships:  in the Euro-Atlantic area through the 50-nation Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council and the Partnership for Peace (PfP); in the Mediterranean through the Mediterranean Dialogue; and in the Gulf region through the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative.  NATO also has individual relationships with other partners across the globe.
