Fall of the Berlin Wall

When Günter Schabowski, an official of the ruling party in the German Democratic Republic, announced on 9 November 1989 that East Germans would be granted freedom to travel, a large number of people immediately attempted to go to West Berlin.

They gathered at the Wall’s checkpoints, requesting the opening of the gates, then crossed and climbed onto the Wall, joined by Western Germans.

The fall of the Berlin Wall started on the evening of 9 November 1989 and paved the way for the German reunification of 3 October 1990.
