General James L. Jones, announced today that Allied Command Europe
(ACE) will officially be renamed, Allied Command Operations (ACO).

The 2003 Planning Board for Ocean Shipping (PBOS) Military Support
Workshop was held on 2-4 September 2003 at the Soefartsstyrelsen

Robertson visits NATO and Partner countries |
|
With only a few months to go before he leaves his position as Secretary
General of NATO, Lord Robertson started his farewell tour of NATO
and Partner countries with a trip to Hungary and Bulgaria on 4 September,
and a visit to the Netherlands on 8 September.

Exercise
Air Meet 2003 |
|
A live air exercise, NATO Air Meet 2003, started in Poland on 5 September
to train participants in tactical air operations. This year, air forces
from 15 NATO member countries are participating in the exercise.

Mr Harri Holkeri, the new Head of the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK),

|
NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson continued his round of farewell
visits to NATO member and partner countries with a visit to Denmark
and Norway on 11 and 12 September 2003.

Rocket
attacks on ISAF installations |
|
Two rockets were fired at ISAF bases in Kabul on the evening of 11
September. One rocket hit Camp Warehouse, and the other landed near
Camp Julien.

HRH Princess Colonel Aisha Al-Hussein, sister of King Abdullah of
Jordan, participated in a Mediterranean Dialogue meeting on military
cooperation at NATO HQ on 12 September.

Practicing
maritime operations with partners |

NATO’s biannual maritime exercise Cooperative Engagement 2003
is taking place from 13 to 20 September 2003 near Split, Croatia, and
in the Adriatic Sea.
As part of the exercise, more than 500 personnel, 14 ships and
4 aircraft from NATO and countries will train together in mine countermeasures
and search and rescue operations.

Close to 8,500 military personnel from twelve NATO nations are taking
part in Northern Light 2003, a major NATO crisis response exercise

Appointment
of Secretary General designate |
|
This afternoon, the
North Atlantic Council appointed Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer (right),
currently Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs, as Secretary
General of NATO and Chairman of the North Atlantic Council,
in succession to Lord Robertson of Port Ellen.
Mr. de Hoop Scheffer will assume his functions as Secretary
General on 1 January 2004.

Secretary
General visits Central Asia and Afghanistan |
|
NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson said the Alliance
is examining options for a possible expansion of the NATO-led
peacekeeping force in Afghanistan during a visit to Kabul,
which followed visits to Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, 23
to 26 September.

Karzai met for 90 minutes in Scotland on Sunday 28 September.
They discussed Lord Robertson’s visit to Kabul last
week and a range of issues relating to the future of NATO’s

|

|
The newly appointed Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Mr Kostyantyn Gryshchenko,
came to NATO HQ on 30 September for a bilateral meeting with Lord Robertson.

Ukraine's
integration into Euro-Atlantic structures |
|
A seminar promoting the implementation of the NATO-Ukraine Target Plan
took place in Kyiv on 30 September with the aim of informing the military
and involving the Force ministries in the country's integration process.
