NATO’s new training mission for Afghanistan is activated in Kabul

Less than nine months after NATO’s Heads of State and Government announced the establishment of the NATO Training Mission for Afghanistan (NTM-A), at the Alliance’s Summit meeting in Strasbourg-Kehl, the NATO Flag was raised today at Camp Eggers in Kabul marking the start of NATO’s mission to enhance training and mentoring of the Afghan National Security Forces.

On behalf of NATO, I congratulate very warmly Herman Van Rompuy for being named as the first ever President of the European Council, and Baroness Catherine Ashton for being appointed High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Both are extremely well qualified for, and well deserving of their new positions. I look forward to working with them to deepen the strategic partnership between the European Union and NATO.

This is an historic event: the second time in modern Afghan history that a government has taken office peacefully. It is a testimony to the courage of the Afghan people, and their determination to exercise their hard-won democratic right to choose their own leaders.
