Photo Exhibit “Childhood under Fire – Growing up in Ukraine Today” opens at NATO Headquarters
Photographs documenting the destruction caused by Russia's war against Ukraine and its impact on children are on display at NATO Headquarters.
On Tuesday (23 May 2023), the NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security, Irene Fellin, and the Belgian Permanent Representative to NATO, Ambassador Ariadne Petridis, opened the exhibition entitled: “Childhood under Fire – Growing up in Ukraine Today”. On display until 30 May, the exhibition features photos and interactive pieces provided by Save the Children UK. It gives a picture of children’s everyday life in Ukraine since the beginning of the war.
“This exhibition gives a visceral taste of what today’s and tomorrow’s conflicts bring to the most vulnerable in any society – our children,” Ms Fellin said. She added that Allies are working to finalise a NATO policy on children and armed conflict, with a view to having it agreed at the Vilnius Summit in July.
Save the Children UK’s Chief Executive Officer, Gwen Hines, and the Head of the Mission of Ukraine to NATO, Ambassador Nataliia Galibarenko, also took part in the opening. Children and Armed Conflict is one of five priority areas for NATO’s Human Security work. NATO’s first policy on Children and Armed Conflict will further integrate United Nations Security Council Resolution 1612 in NATO’s military operations, training and education.
