Issue Emerging NATO and Mediterranean Dialogue country leaders in the fields of business, politics, academia and media will exchange views on future prospects of Mediterranean security. This conference, co-sponsored for the 2nd year running by NATO, will also help to build ties and forge permanent links among the successor generation of young leaders from NATO and Mediterranean Dialogue countries as a further NATO confidence building measure in the Mediterranean Region.

Lord Robertson addresses NATO's future at Munich Conference

NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson addressed the question of NATO's future at the annual Conference on Security Policy in Munich, Germany, on 3 February.

Lord Robertson emphasised NATO's relevance in the wake of 11 September terrorist attacks, but warned that the European Allies and Canada had to improve their military capabilities to avert US unilateralism.

NATO-Russia conference on combating terrorism

A NATO-Russia conference on the role of the military in combating terrorism took place in Rome, Italy, at the NATO Defense College on 4 February. This joint initiative brought together decision-makers and academics from NATO member states and Russia to explore avenues for cooperation against terrorism in the wake of the 11 September attacks on the United States.

Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov visited NATO Headquarters on 6 February 2002 to meet with NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson and discuss his country's preparations for NATO membership.

Arrests in Kosovo

"One of the main priorities of the international community is to re-establish the rule of law as the cornerstone of a democratic society in Kosovo", Lord Robertson stressed in a statement on the arrest of three members of the former Kosovo Liberation Army. Latif Gashi, Naim Kadriu and Nazif Mehmeti were arrested by the UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), with the assistance of the NATO-led peacekeeping force, KFOR.

Presentation of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy to Dr. Bernd Goetze

On behalf of the President of the Italian Republic, Ambassador Amedeo de Franchis, Permanent Representative of Italy to NATO, bestows the decoration of Commander of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy on Dr. Bernd Goetze in aknowledgement of his accomplishement at NATO, in particular with regard to the success of the NATO ministerial meetings and to the protracted preparation for last year's Informal meeting of Defence Ministers.

Meeting of reserve officers at NATO HQ

The Confédération Interalliée des Officiers de Réserve (CIOR) held their 54th Mid-Winter meeting at NATO HQ, 7-9 February 2002. During these three days, they discussed a number of initiatives such as the "11 September 2001 Reserve Doctrine", which is a statement on the significance of Reserves in the combat against terrorism. The doctrine stresses the importance of Reserves in creating a link between civil society and the military and their role in conveying to the public the significance of democratic values in the face of terrorism.

Renewed request for NATO assistance in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (1)

During his visit to Skopje on 8 February, NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson, received an official request from President Trajkovski for the extension of Operation Amber Fox. The President asked for a further three-month's extension of the NATO operation, which started in September 2001. The request will be examined by the Alliance and a decision taken shortly.

Lord Robertson in Poland

NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson, travelled to Warsaw, 13-14 February 2002, to meet Prime Minister Leszek Miller, Foreign Minister Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz and Defence Minister Jerzy Szmajdzinski. Among the issues discussed were the implementation of Poland's defence reform, the evolution of NATO's relations with Russia, the enlargement process and initiatives currently being developed by the Alliance to combat terrorism.

Workshop on warning and detection procedures

A workshop on warning and detection procedures for the protection of populations against dangers such as radiation, took place on 13-14 February 2002 in Bucharest, Romania. The aim of the workshop was to introduce and practice the use of Alliance Technical Procedures on Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Warning and Reporting Systems and prepare Partner countries in using NATO formats.

Exercise Dogfish

A NATO exercise focusing on anti-submarine warfare is taking place in the Ionian Sea, to the east of Sicily, from 14 to 27 February. The aim of this annual exercise, which is the largest of its kind in the world, is to maintain Allied proficiency in coordinated anti-submarine, anti-surface, and coastal surveillance operations using a multi-national force of ships, submarines and aircraft.

Conference on NATO enlargement

A conference on "NATO enlargement and security policy in the 21st century" was held on 15-16 February in the Danish Parliament, Copenhagen.

The conference examined the issue of NATO enlargement from different perspectives -geographical, political and strategic- with particular consideration being given to the effects of the 11 September terrorist attacks on NATO's strategic thinking and NATO's relations with Russia.

Turkey and Greece celebrate 50 years of NATO membership

"It has been half a century of strong solidarity with the entire Atlantic community, and determined contribution to Euro-Atlantic security", stressed NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson, in a statement on the 50th anniversary of Greece and Turkey in NATO. Both countries signed the North Atlantic Treaty on 18 February 1952 and have been "key contributors" in promoting the security of the Euro-Atlantic area, and more specifically, NATO's Southern Flank.

Extension of Amber Fox
The North Atlantic Council has agreed to authorise the extension of Operation Amber Fox for a further three months until 26 June 2002, as a response to a formal request from the government of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (1) for further assistance with the security of the international monitoring presence in the country.

Parliamentarians come to NATO HQ

The President, Mr Rafael Estrella, and members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, together with delegations from all NATO member parliaments, came to NATO HQ on 18 February 2002, for their annual meeting with the North Atlantic Council - NATO's top decision making body.

Exercise ARRCADE GUARD

Germany is hosting a NATO exercise, ARRCADE GUARD 2002, from 18 February to 7 March. Organised by the Allied Command Europe Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC), the exercise involves approximately 2500 personnel from 17 NATO countries and aims to evaluate the ARRC as a High Readiness Force (Land) headquarters under NATO military restructuring.

Tajikistan signs the Partnership for Peace Framework Document

Tajikistan signed today the Partnership for Peace (PfP) Framework Document, becoming the 27th country of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council to join the Partnership for Peace Programme. The Framework Document was signed by the Ambassador of Tajikistan, Mr. Sharif Rahimov, during a meeting at NATO's Headquarters with the North Atlantic Council.

Lord Robertson continues visit of candidate countries

As part of his tour of Partner countries aspiring to membership of the Alliance, NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson, travelled to Latvia on 21 February and Lithuania on 22 February 2002. During his visit to these two Baltic countries, he underlined that criteria for NATO membership was not limited to military aspects only and that support for NATO membership should be widespread among all sectors of their societies.

Major EAPC seminar on combating terrorism

A high-level seminar on the role of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC) in combating terrorism was held in Warsaw, Poland, 22-23 February 2002. This major event was organised within the framework of the EAPC Action Plan for 2002-2004 which provides for ways of exploring new cooperative approaches to fighting terrorism.

Working toward a NATO-Russia strategic partnership

An international conference on "Russia-NATO Strategic Partnership: not whether but when?" was held in St Petersburg on 22 February 2002. High-level participants from NATO and Partner countries, including the US Ambassador to Russia, Alexander Vershbow, and Dr. Irina Hakamada, Vice-Speaker of the Duma and member of the Union of the Rightist Forces addressed the conference, which focused on the state of NATO-Russia relations in the political and military spheres and prospects for further development.

Lord Robertson visits Bulgaria
