Tajikistan signs the Partnership for Peace Framework Document
Tajikistan signed today the Partnership for Peace (PfP) Framework Document, becoming the 27th country of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council to join the Partnership for Peace Programme. The Framework Document was signed by the Ambassador of Tajikistan, Mr. Sharif Rahimov, during a meeting at NATO's Headquarters with the North Atlantic Council. By joining PfP, Tajikistan has entered a new framework for practical security cooperation with NATO. The activities open to Tajikistan through PfP will include a vast array of opportunities in areas such as civil emergency planning, enhanced cooperation with NATO in fields related to scientific affairs, environmental programmes and military reforms. By signing the PfP Framework Document, Tajikistan has made the distance between Dushanbe and Brussels only confined to geography. On this occasion, NATO wants to express its satisfaction to see Tajikistan joining the Partnership for Peace Programme as other Central Asian Partners previously did. Central Asia remains an important component of the security and stability of the Euro-Atlantic area and the security of Central Asia has a direct bearing on the security of Europe. Following the terrorist attacks on the 11th September, the EAPC expressed solidarity with the United States, condemned these barbaric acts and pledged to undertake all efforts to combat the scourge of terrorism. Tajikistan's courageous decision to support the international coalition against terrorism did not go unnoticed in NATO. Combating terrorism requires wider cooperation than just between Allies, and support from Tajikistan, as well as other Central Asian Partners, has been - and is still - of key importance. The next step for Tajikistan will be to prepare its Presentation Document and agree with NATO on an Individual Partnership Programme, which will suit the country's needs. NATO will work closely with, and assist Tadjik experts in, developing these documents. And Tajikistan will ultimately decide on the intensity and depth of co-operation with NATO according to Tajikistan's willingness and resources. Additional information:
