Commemoration of 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.

11 May

The Non-Proliferation Treaty is extended indefinitely by consensus.

15 May

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defence of the WEU gathered in Lisbon, where they discussed the future relationship between the WEU and NATO.

25 May

In response to a request from the UN, NATO aircraft attack a Bosnian Serb ammunition depot near Pale. This is followed by a second attack the next day.

27 May

At a meeting, the North Atlantic Council demands that the Bosnian Serbs stop their attacks on UN safe areas and comply with the UNPROFOR ultimatum to remove all heavy weapons from the Sarajevo exclusion zone or place them under UN control. It condemns the killing and detention of UN peacekeepers.

30-31 May

The NATO Foreign Ministers and the North Atlantic Cooperation Council meet in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. At a special meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Kozyrev, Russia formally accepts the Russian Individual Partnership Programme under PfP and the document on Areas for Pursuance of a Broad, Enhanced NATO-Russia Dialogue and Cooperation. In a statement on the situation in former Yugoslavia, the North Atlantic Council condemns the escalation of violence by the parties and hostile acts against UN personnel.
