NATO Deputy Secretary General and European Commissioner discuss cyber challenges

NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller met with the European Commissioner for the Security Union, Sir Julian King, on Wednesday (9 October 2019) for talks on common security challenges.

Commissioner King briefed on the EU coordinated risk assessment of the cybersecurity of 5G networks.

The Deputy Secretary General thanked the Commission for their comprehensive work in this area. She reiterated that Allies regularly discuss the threats and challenges associated with emerging and disruptive technologies, including advanced communication networks.

As part of the implementation of the two Joint Declarations signed by NATO Secretary General and President of the European Council Tusk and President of the European Commission Juncker, NATO and the EU will continue to regularly exchange views on cyber and hybrid challenges. NATO’s top officials regularly engage with EU leaders and Commissioners on contemporary security and defence issues of mutual interest, for example the potential impact of technological developments upon critical cyber and physical infrastructures.
