Major General Ondřej Novosad was born on December 17, 1962 in Jeseník in the Czechoslovakia. He graduated from the Military Academy in 1986 and entered the engineer branch. Following initial command assignments, he returned to the Military Academy in 1990 for postgraduate study. After that he served as the Commander of the Officers School from 1991 to 1992 and held multiple positions in the 5th Special Force Regiment from 1993 to 1996. In 1996 he served as the deputy battalion commander in the United Nations peacekeeping mission UNTAES in Eastern Slavonia and as a Chief of Staff of Quick Reaction Battalion in Martin from 1997 to 1999.

Since 2000 he commanded the Slovak contingent deployed as a part of KFOR led by NATO in Kosovo. From 2000 to 2002 he served as a senior staff officer in the Land Forces Headquarters of the Slovak Armed Forces. From 2002 to 2003 he was in charge of the Engineer Battalion in Sered. From 2003 to 2004 he commanded the Slovak contingent deployed in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM in Iraq. From 2004 to 2006 he served as Commander of Operations of the Military Command Center on the General Staff of the Slovak Armed Forces and in 2007 he was appointed as a Chief of Department J5 on the General Staff. Then he served from 2007 to 2010 as the Commander of the 2nd Mechanized Brigade. In 2010 he was appointed as the Deputy Commander of the Land Forces. Since September 2012 he has been appointed to the position of Land Forces Commander of the Slovak Armed Forces.

Major General Novosad´s military education includes: the Senior Officer´s Staff Course at the National Defense Academy from 2001 to 2002; Military Language Course at the York St. John University in the UK in 2005; the National Security Course at the National Defense Academy of Slovak Armed Forces from 2006 to 2007 and the United States Defense Language Institute´s English language program in 2012. In 2016 he graduated as a Ph.D on Military Academy.

Major General Novosad is married to his wife Iveta and he has 3 children. His hobbies include Martial Arts, history and literature. He speaks English, German and Russian.
