Stefano Dotti, Military Representative of Italy

Vice Admiral Stefano DOTTI assumed the position of Italian Military Representative to the Military Committees of NATO and the European Union on 13 October 2015.

He was promoted Vice Admiral on 1st July 2015.

VADM  DOTTI was born in Malles Venosta (South Tirol) on August 7, 1955.

He attended the Naval Academy of Livorno (Leghorn) from 1974 to 1978. Amongst his most significant  appointments:

  • in 1978, as Ensign and LTJG, Navigator on board Cruiser VITTORIO VENETO and in 1980 on board Training Sailship Amerigo VESPUCCI;
  • from 1982 to ‘85, Comms Officer of the Destroyer ARDITO, then Flag-Lieutenant to the Commander of the 1st Naval Division on board Cruiser Andrea DORIA;
  • from 1985 to ‘86, Commanding Officer of the Auxiliary Water Tanker BRADANO;
  • from 1986 to ‘88, Commanding Officer of the 3rd and 4th Classes of the Standard Courses of the Naval Academy;
  • from 1991 to ‘93, as Commander, Director of the Comms Center in La Spezia;
  • from 1993 to ‘94, XO of the Aircraft Carrier Giuseppe GARIBALDI, then CO of the ASW Frigate LIBECCIO, in the period 1994/96;
  • from 1986 to 2000, Head of the Comms Office at the Navy General Staff in Rome;
  • from 2000 to ‘01, CO of the Destroyer Luigi DURAND DE LA PENNE;
  • from 2001 to ‘06, Head of the Combat System Branch of the Studies and Programs Department within the Studies and Programs Department of the Italian Navy General Staff;
  • from 2007 to 2010, Chief of the Studies and Programs Department of the Italian Navy General Staff and NNAG National Representative.

He has been appointed to the Italian Defence General Staff (IDGS) of the Italian Ministry of Defence as Chief of the IV Department, Logistics & Infrastructure, and Italian NSPA (formerly NAMSO) Board Member (Sep. 2010 – Sep. 2013), acting also as RPPB and Logistics Committee National Representative.

Before assuming his current position, Vice Admiral Stefano DOTTI was Head of the General Office for Environment and Safety of the Italian Navy General Staff.

During his career, he took part to the following Missions/Operations:

  • 1979 / South China Sea Campaign (Vietnamese boat people rescue);
  • 1983/84 / LEBANON TWO;
  • 1993 / SHARP GUARD and SOMALIA 2 as XO;
  • 1994/96/SOMALIA 3; UN Operation UNITED SHIELD SHARP GUARD, WEUCONMARFOR and IFOR as CO;
  • 2000/01 / STANAVFORMED as Flag Captain.

VADM DOTTI attended the 147th Navy Officers Command Course; the NATO Maritime Communication Staff Officers; the 58th session of the IASD – Higher Defence Studies Institute in 2006/2007; the 19th Advanced Staff Course; the General & Flag Officers Course at the Defence NATO College in Rome and Bruxelles.

He holds a master degree in Maritime and Naval Sciences from the University of Pisa.

He is Commander, Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. His decorations and awards include: the Bronze Navy Merit Medal for the Operation in South China Sea; the Bronze Navy Long Navigation Medal (10 yrs); the Gold Long Meritorious Command Medal (20 yrs); the Golden Cross for Seniority of Service (25 years); the Cross of Merit for Operations in Somalia; the Memorial Cross for Peace Mission in Lebanon; the Memorial Cross for Peace Operations in Bosnia – IFOR; the NATO Medal for Operations SHARP GUARD – Maritime Monitor – Maritime Guard); the WEU Medal for Operations in the former Yugoslavia; the Italian Defence General Staff General Meritorious Service Ribbon; the Italian Navy General Staff Meritorious Service Ribbon (10 yrs); the Mauriziana Medal for 50 years of military career; the Golden Cross with Stars for Seniority of Service (40 yrs).

Admiral DOTTI and his wife Rita have a son, Francesco.
