NATO Secretary General visits Belgrade

NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer met with Serbian President Boris Tadic, Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, as well as the Foreign and Defence Ministers during a visit to Belgrade, 8 March.

All welcomed Serbia's new membership in NATO’s Partnership for Peace, and the Secretary General urged the Serbian Government to take the steps necessary to deepen the relationship on move it to a more practical level.

They also discussed the Kosovo status process. Mr. De Hoop Scheffer stressed that NATO is not playing a role in the negotiations, but that the Alliance has a stake in the process, as the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR) will continue to guarantee security for all in Kosovo.

Finally, the Secretary General and President Tadic agreed that Serbia's future lies in European and Euro-Atlantic integration.
