NATO starts airlifting African Union troops to Darfur |

NATO has launched its airlift operations in support of the the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS), with the first movement of Nigerian troops on 1 July. Airlifts of personnel from Gambia, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal and South Africa will continue through July, August and September.

Looking at new approaches to civil-military relations |

A NATO-sponsored conference is being organised by the Geneva Centre for Security Policy to discuss possibilities to improve civil-military relations through new strategies and practices. The event, which will take place from 6 to 8 July in Geneva, will bring together senior NATO civilian and military staff with representatives of international organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs)active in the humanitarian and development fields.

Safe disposal of rocket fuel |
|
Melanj, a rocket fuel oxidiser used in the past by Warsaw Pact countries, is a highly complex mixture of chemical substances which evaporates easily and is highly toxic. In many countries, this liquid propellant is still stored in special containers, where it was placed for immediate filling of missiles. These containers have deteriorated with time and now present a danger for the environment and public health.

Two new Centres of Excellence, in Turkey and Norway, will offer NATO and partner countries advanced training in defence against terrorism and for winter operations.

Addressing new parliamentarians |

Members of Parliament from NATO and Partner countries were invited to NATO HQ on 15 July. They were briefed on current issues by the Secretary General and other senior officials. Their programme was organised by the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, in cooperation with the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces. It included a visit to the Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, and the Council of the European Union in Brussels.
