A NATO-sponsored conference is being organised by the Geneva Centre for Security Policy to discuss possibilities to improve civil-military relations through new strategies and practices. The event, which will take place from 6 to 8 July in Geneva, will bring together senior NATO civilian and military staff with representatives of international organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs)active in the humanitarian and development fields.
 |
Through presentations and panel discussions, the almost 100 participants will look at lessons learned from the experience of civil-military cooperation with NATO, particularly in the Balkans and Afghanistan. Key issues that will be examined are the need for concerted planning, the potential for developing principles and guidelines on best practices, and the implications for cooperation at the strategic, operational and tactical levels. This upcoming conference represents a follow-up to a seminar for NGOs that was organised in Brussels in November 2004. It underpins the Atlantic Alliance's commitment to consolidate mutually beneficial partnerships between civil and military actors in the conflict prevention and crisis management fields.
