NATO
welcomes seven new members |
|
On 2 April a flag-raising ceremony and a special meeting
of NATO Foreign Ministers was held at NATO to celebrate
the accession of Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania,
Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Foreign
Ministers adopt declaration on terrorism |
|
Following the Accession Ceremony to welcome Bulgaria, Estonia,
Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia as NATO
members, the Foreign Ministers and Representatives of NATO
met informally at NATO Headquarters on 2 April. Ministers
discussed matters of common interest and concern to the Alliance,
with a view to the NATO Summit to be held in Istanbul on
28-29 June.

First
meeting of NATO-Russia Council "at 27" |
|
On
2 April 2004, Foreign Ministers of the NATO-Russia Council
(NRC) met in Brussels for the first time in an enlarged format
“at 27”. Ministers welcomed the participation of Bulgaria,
Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia.

Experts and top officials from NATO countries
and the Russian Federation discussed ways of enhancing
military cooperation in the fight against terrorism at
a conference in Norfolk, US, on 5 April.

met in Norfolk, US, on 6 April for a high-level seminar
on NATO’s transformation and developing forces that can
be rapidly deployed across the globe.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili addressed
the North Atlantic Council and met for talks with NATO
Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer during a one-day
visit to NATO HQ, 7 April.

Kosovo envoy briefs NATO Council |
|
Harri Holkeri, the Special Representative
of the United Nations for Kosovo, visited NATO on 7 April
to brief the North Atlantic Council on the situation in
the province following the recent violence.

and Russia enhance military cooperation |

During a visit to Moscow on 7 and 8 April
NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer signed agreements
establishing Russian military liaison offices at NATO’s
top military headquarters.

member countries have decided to jointly purchase a state-of-the-art
ground surveillance system by Spring 2005.

NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer reiterated

In the past week, the NATO-led International Security
Assistance Force (ISAF) supported Afghan forces in detaining a number
of individuals suspected of posing an imminent threat to security
in Kabul.

On a visit to Kosovo on 22 April, the
Representatives of the 26 NATO countries and the Secretary
General said that Kosovo leaders were doing too little to rebuild
security and trust after recent violence in the province.

During a visit to Ljubljana on 23 April, NATO
Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer congratulated Slovenia
on its accession to NATO, calling it “a rightly deserved achievement”.
