Secretary General in
Denmark
NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer travelled to Copenhagen
on 30 April to discuss key points on the agenda of the upcoming summit
in Istanbul with Prime
Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, including the preparation of an enhanced
package against
terrorism.
They also talked about the Alliance's missions in the Balkans
and Afghanistan to which Denmark contributes. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer thanked
the Prime Minister for the additional forces that had recently been sent
to Kosovo, as well as for Denmark's current contributions in Bosnia and
Herzegovina and Afghanistan.
Jaap de Hoop Scheffer also met the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Per Stig Mǿller,
as well as the new Defence Minister, Soeren Gade, who was appointed on 24 April.
He received an update on Denmark's ongoing defence reform and discussed the
need to continue developing capabilities.
In addition, the Secretary General was received by the Queen and His
Royal Highness the Prince Consort at the Fredensberg Palace. He also went
to the Folketinget (Danish Parliament) where he met members of the Parliamentary
Foreign Policy and Defence Committees and parliamentarians involved in the
NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
