New NATO Headquarters
Revised design
Sustainability

Background
New NATO Headquarters - Revised design

There are many aspects to the "sustainable" building strategy used in the HQ. The roofs of the short wings will be planted with sedum-type plants and grasses. This has multiple benefits, including reducing the peak flow and total volume of water run-off from the roofs, insulating the roofs from heat and cold and, by photosynthesis the consequent absorption of CO2.

The roofs to long wings are constructed to allow rain water collection for sanitation use within the HQ Building.

Cooling of the structure will be accomplished through the " slab cooling " technique rather than air conditioning. And co-generation will maximize the efficiency of the facility's energy consumption, through re-use of waste heat for building heating and cooling.
