Secretary General visits United States
NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer met on 27 October with President Bush, with Secretaries Rice and Rumsfeld, as well as with Stephen Hadley, Assistant to the President For National Security Affairs. With President Bush, the Secretary General discussed a number of issues. First, the Riga agenda, looking forward to the Summit in a few weeks and areas where progress needs to be made between now and then. They discussed Afghanistan extensively, the importance of maintaining NATO’s commitment to the country and reinforcing the success that the Alliance has had until now, ensuring that Afghanistan does not slip back to what it was five years go.
They discussed also the situation in Darfur with both leaders expressing concern about the security environment in the region. The Secretary General committed NATO to continue the support that it is providing to peacekeepers in the region |
