High-level diplomacy at NATO
Beginning on Monday, 31 January, this week will see a flurry of diplomacy at NATO, with visits by several Foreign Ministers from both NATO and non-NATO countries. On Monday, the Foreign Ministers of Italy and Lithuania will visit NATO HQ for talks with the Secretary General of NATO, Jaap De Hoop Scheffer. The Secretary General will also receive the Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan, one of the Alliance’s partner countries. Wednesday will see a visit by the Foreign Minister of Australia and the Deputy Foreign Minister of Bahrain. Transatlantic talks The Secretary General will then travel to London for talks with Prime Minister Tony Blair, the Foreign Secretary, the Defence Secretary and other senior officials. All these meeting will help set the stage for the visit by Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice to NATO HQ on February 9 th, the upcoming meeting of NATO Defence Ministers in Nice on 9-10 February, and the Summit of NATO Heads of State and Government at NATO Headquarters on 22 February. “The Summit meeting, the Defence Ministers meeting, and the visit by Secretary of State Rice will make for an important month at NATO. Alliance leaders will discuss the key strategic issues on their common agenda, and take forward NATO’s operations, missions and partnerships, so that the Alliance can better provide for security and project stability”, said NATO Spokesman James Appathurai.
