NATO-Ukraine
Joint Working Group
on Science and Environment
A meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Working Group on Scientific and
Environmental Cooperation took place on 22 May at NATO Headquarters,
consolidating relations and cooperation already being developed
in the areas of science and environment. The meeting was co-chaired
by Mr. Andriy Hurzhiy, First Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry
of Education and Science of Ukraine, and Mr. Jean Fournet, NATO
Assistant Secretary General for Scientific and Environmental
Affairs.
In discussing possible improvements for cooperation, a number
of areas were suggested for study such as possible prioritisation
of the type of subject supported, support for projects with
impact in the different regions of Ukraine and the possibility
of establishing special expert Fellowships to ensure that leaders
of technological institutions in Ukraine remain at the top of
their fields. The delegation from Ukraine noted, in particular,
the value to their country of the Research and Development projects
underway in the Science for Peace programme; their views will
be reported to the NATO-Ukraine Commission at its next meeting
in Kyiv in July.
