Exercise
NATO Air Meet 2001
|
|
A live flying exercise, involving air forces from 13 NATO member
countries started on 3 September and will last until 14 September.
The aim of Exercise Air Meet is to train air forces in tactical
air operations, including training in the suppression of enemy air
defences and electronic warfare.

Issue |
Conference on emerging security issues in the Mediterranean
Region and the Middle East, as well as on the role of international
organisations in the Mediterranean. Participation of academics and
policy practitioners from Europe, North America and from the Northern
and Southern part of the Mediterranean.
The first part of the conference was held in plenary session and
the second part was structured into working groups on themes such
as the Middle East peace process and Greek-Turkish relations.

"Building
a vision: NATO's future transformation"
|
|
A high-level symposium entitled "Building a vision:
NATO's future transformation" is being held, 5-7 September, in the
Norwegian capital, Oslo. The symposium will raise some of the issues
the Alliance faces in today's rapidly changing international environment
and will also be an opportunity to discuss the ideas and visions
currently being put forward to address these issues.

Uzbekistan
celebrates its 10th anniversary of independence
|
|
On the occasion of the Republic of Uzbekistan's
10th anniversary of independence, 1 September, Lord Robertson sent
a letter of congratulations to President Islam Karimov. The Secretary
General also met with the newly appointed Ambassador to NATO, H.E.
Alisher Shaykhov on 5 September.

Automated
system for management of partner programmes
|
|
During a ceremony organised on 5 September, the
Ambassador of Switzerland to NATO, Anton Thalmann, officially handed
over an electronic system designed to manage NATO's Partnership
for Peace programme (PfP) to a senior NATO official, Deputy Assistant
Secretary General, Holger Pfeiffer.

Operation
Essential Harvest
|
|
On 5 September, NATO Spokesman Yves Brodeur, responded
to speculations being made in the press with regard to the period
immediately following the end of Operation Essential Harvest. He
stated that "Once Operation Essential Harvest has successfully
completed its task, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (1)
will be entering a phase of consolidation. It will be for the government
of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (1)
to decide how it wants to proceed forward, taking advantage of what
we believe will be a promising environment for stability and peace
as a result of Operation Essential Harvest."

Issue |
Workshop divided into ten sessions where senior academics
from Europe, North America and the seven NATO Mediterranean Dialogue
countries discussed NATO's Mediterranean Dialogue initiative and different
dimensions of Mediterranean security including environmental security,
population growth, urbanisation, migration, food shortages, water
scarcity, as well as emergency challenges.
The workshop is organised on a yearly basis and was co-sponsored
by the NATO Office of Information and Press.
