NATO's New Secretary General Lord Robertson
On Thursday 14 October, NATO's newly appointed Secretary General, The Rt. Hon. the Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, took up his functions at NATO Headquarters. He was designated to be the tenth Secretary General in August 1999, in succession to Dr Javier Solana.
Lord Robertson will carry the Alliance into the 21st century and pursue efforts toward the stabilisation of the Balkans in the wake of the Kosovo crisis, the implementation of the Defence Capabilities Initiative adopted during the Washington Summit, the reinforcement of the European role in NATO, the establishment of closer relations with Russia and further strengthening of links with NATO's Partner countries.
George Robertson, 53, was formerly Secretary of State for Defence of the United Kingdom, a position which he had held since May 1997. He had been a Member of Parliament since 1978 and received a life peerage in August 1999, thus taking the title of Lord Robertson of Port Ellen.
