Collections

The Library holds over 20,000 books and subscribes to 212 journals. The collection focuses on international relations, security and defense, military affairs, international organizations and current world affairs.

Not only books are catalogued and indexed, but also more than 22,000 individual articles in journals. You can search for them in our online catalog.

Visiting the Library

The Library essentially serves in-house staff.

Visitors are permitted to consult the Library holdings with prior authorization. They must first send a form to the NATO Librarian describing the subject and the purpose of their research (thesis, paper etc.)

The review procedure requires two weeks on average. Once granted, Library access is allowed for a period of six months, after which an application for an extension has to be filed.

Visitors may borrow books only through their local library. Please click here for more details.

Interlibrary loans

All the books described in the Library Catalog are available for interlibrary loan (ILL). The only exception are items marked with ‘Type : REF’, which have to be consulted on the premises.

You can place ILL requests by e-mail or by phone (32.2.707.44.14).

ILL is provided to you free of charge. Items have to be returned by registered mail within one month.

We only lend books to other libraries. As an individual please place your request through your own local library.

Photocopies of journal articles are provided free of charge within certain limitations (reasonable amount of pages, non-availability in other major libraries etc.). Please contact the Library to ensure your request can be dealt with.

Acquisitions Lists : published every month, they list the latest books received by the Library and include journal articles on NATO-related topics.
