NATO Stock Number

A NATO Stock Number is a 13-digit numeric code used to identify and manage standardized material items of supply within NATO member countries and partner armed forces.

It ensures that every item, from aircraft to lightbulbs, is cataloged and easily accessible in supply chains.

The NSN is divided into two parts:

The NATO Supply Class (NSC): Four digits which indicates the general category of the item.

The NATO Item Identification Number (NIIN): This uniquely identifies the item and consits of a two-digit National Codification Bureau (NCB) number followed by a seven-digit item number.

NSC

The NATO Supply Class NSC can be broken down into two parts. The first two digits identify the broad scope of property, and is called the NATO Supply Group (NSG).

NIIN

The first two digits of the NATO Item Identification Number (NIIN) signify the country that assigned the NSN. For example, 00 and 01 are both used in the NSN to identify the United States. The remaining seven digits are sequentially assigned to make each NSN unique.
