❝The birth of Codification, a logistic game changer❞
The NATO Codification System (NCS) emerges post World War 2. It stemmed from the initial need to optimize, accelerate, and simplify the delivery of defense items on the ground.
Soldiers needed the right items, at the right place, at the right time.
Under the supervision of American President F.D. Roosevelt, Lieutenant General George S. Patton Jr finds a unique way to item of supply, using the appropriate codes.
❝What is Codification?❞
Codification (cataloging) is a process which:
Initially exclusive to the Allied Forces, the benefits of the NCS are now shared with the private industry through the NATO Master Catalogue of References for Logistics (NMCRL).
Based on the NATO standards, the NMCRL is the only common, up-to-date and user-friendly platform for logistical data of defence equipment for the participating member countries, as well as for their defence industry. With high data quality, it ensures the supply chain of military logistical support from the aspect of the "right part". The NMCRL thus contributes to the benefit of the participating nations, their defence industry, as well as NATO.
The current version of the NMCRL is published on the NSPA e-portal. This website provides general information on NMCRL, including its subscription plans. It is maintained and published by NSPA.
❝… make the NCS as efficient as possible❞
The Allied Committee 135 (AC/135) is the NATO committee responsible for the management and strategy of the NATO Codification System. It is composed of every member country’s National Director on Codification.
The mission of the AC/135 is to make the NCS as efficient as possible to better meet the logistics requirements of the forces involved in joint operations. National Directors constantly monitor the strategy and efficiency of the NCS.
