from Madrid and Mostar

First published April 7, 2003
The University of Madrid 'Complutensa' and the two Mostar
ones recently signed a memorandum of intentions.
The Ambassador of Spain in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Rafael
Valle Garagorri, presided over the ceremony, co-ordinated
by the Spanish CIMIC unit. Rafael Puyol Antolín, Rector
of the University 'Complutensa', Elbisa Ustajmic, Rector of
the Bosniac University 'Dzemal Bijedic', and Franjo Ljubic,
Rector of the Bosnian-Croat one 'Sveuciliste', signed the
agreement.
Spanish Lt. Gen. Domingo Marcos Miralles, Director of the
Defence High Studies Centre (Centro Superior de Estudios de
la Defensa Nacional, CESEDEN) and Col. José Monasterio
Rentería, chief of SFOR's Spanish contingent, alongside
with the Mayor of Mostar and his Deputy, also attended the
ceremony.
Among areas of common interest, the following possible forms
of co-operation are planned:
- Exchange of information, including bibliographical material
and scientific publications;
- Interchange of professors for research, teaching or seminaries;
- Joint research activities;
- Joint academic programs, conferences and seminaries;
- Interchange of students and professors for studies and research;
- Concession of study scholarships;
For the first joint activity, the University from Madrid will
grant two scholarships to two students from each University
from Mostar. Those students will attend the summer international
course of 'International Politics, Security and Defence' that
will take place in Madrid next July. According to the military
and academic Spanish representatives, this visit to Mostar
"attests their admiration and recognition towards the
Spanish troops deployed in BiH. Their daily work of stabilisation
of the peace made possible that other organisations - like
in this case, Universities - establish joint relations to
unify a country by means of the culture."
