Dutch bid fairwell to their fair Sisava
 

Sisava - From IFOR I in December 1995 to SFOR VIII today, the Dutch base in Sisava, nestled atop mountains above Travnik, seems to have left everyone with fond memories. The tall pine trees, green grass and breathtaking views along with living accommodations in a beautiful ski chalet hotel, has made of Sisava, over the years, a privileged place to serve a tour of duty.

Canadian's Warm Hearth comforts farmers
 

Livno - The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) provided the Canadian Battle Group with $325,000 (CDN) to purchase housing materials sufficient to rehabilitate up to 85 homes in 10 communities in the Kupres and Livno areas. This will allow over 200 people to remain in their communities for the winter.

Fire in the hole
 

Kalinovik - Even in the sink hole paradise of this firing range, the Italian engineers had to dig even deeper to prepare for the destruction of more than 2,000 hand grenades, 200 artillery rounds, 60 mortar bombs and 250 kg of TNT, set to go up in smoke on October 17th.

The guns of the Chestnut Coy in Sanski Most
 

Sanski Most - The Chestnut Company of the British 1st Royal Horse Artillery Regiment, carries its name well. It's small, but tough. The 150 men and women based in Sanski Most, a town tucked in a farming valley west of Banja Luka, pack the biggest firepower on the theatre with their six AS 90 guns of 155 mm.

Bos Petrovac - Mud, mines and 15 wounded where the key elements of this mass casualty exercise by the Canadian Battle Group in Zgon. Canadians trained hard for a worst case scenario that involved a UXO convoy that overturned.

Train Hard, Bridge Easy
 

Ploce, Croatia - Bailey Bridge Training was held for the Spanish engineers of MND-SE in the Port of Ploce, Croatia, Oct. 9-13. Twenty Spanish engineers from the divisional engineer unit participated in the course. Many of them are experienced bridge-builders, originating from a specialist bridging unit in the Spanish Army 12th Pontoon Regiment of Bridging Specialist Engineers.

Red Mill flexes Reserves
 

Kalinovik - All German soldiers except for a patrol have been pulled out of their area of responsibility when a situation flares up. Local authorities are asking for SFOR's help in handling it. The tactical reserves are called in to handle the situation. This was the plot as soldiers from Germany, France, Spain and Italy took part in the Multinational Division Southeast Exercise Red Mill Oct. 16-17 in the village of Jazici near Kalinovik.

Russian, Norpol, Joint Patrol
 

Doboj - Participating in a joint patrol organised on the occasion of a visit by the Russian paratroopers, this event was part of a series of patrols Norpol carries out with other national contingents in the division.

Foreign Legion
 

Near the village of Seljani, 20 members of the Foreign Legion are preparing to build a new bridge to allow access by trucks to the town perched on a mountain, up very rocky roads. This may sound like many of the missions of SFOR, but in this case, the soldiers doing the work come from 17 different nations and all work for the same army for a common goal.

Macipolje -- Facing the razor sharp mountains on the firing range of Macipolje the Bravo company of the Spanish Battle Group in Mostar spent a whole day training hard in honing their combat skills.

FOMET's major project
 

Cemerno Osje - Due to the geological situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), the construction of roads on the mountains is a very difficult technical problem. Former paths were first widened and later extended to roads. The specific geological situation was not always considered. Consequently landslides occurred and damaged the roads.

The SFOR Irish Contingent
 

Sarajevo - Ireland sent its first contingent to SFOR on July 1, 1997. Currently, the seventh rotation is carrying out its mission in Camp Butmir with 50 members of various ranks.

Slovaks in Sarajevo
 

Sarajevo - Since its foundation in 1993, the Slovak Republic has been actively participating in political and military measures of the International Community in seeking a peaceful solution to the conflict in former Yugoslavia. Since August, 1998, eight Slovak army officers have served in HQ SFOR. On August 25, five of them began a one-year mission in HQ SFOR Sarajevo.

Italian Doctor
 

Rogatica - For many people living in the BiH, medical insurance is a thing of the past. This leaves them with large expenses if they are in need of medical care or medications to treat illnesses. To help ease this burden, 2nd Lt. Stefano Leccardi, a doctor for the Italian Army in Rogatica, carries on the tradition of providing medical care for people in the surrounding area as well as medications when possible.

Soldier in the Spotlight
 

Lt. Col. Horacio Miguel Acuña's military career began in 1976 in the Argentine Army Military Academy. As a cavalry officer, he has experience in commanding armour units, but he has also followed different courses in Argentina, the United States and Canada in Parachuting, Special Forces, Jungle Warfare and Staff College.
