Commemorating the victims of Srebenica

On 20 Sep 2003, more than 20,000 people commemorated the
victims of the Serb mass killings within the Muslim population
in 1995. In the inauguration ceremony for the memorial the
former US President Bill Clinton appealed for the audience
to show forgiveness.

Flying Humvees
|

|
A flying Humvee? Sounds crazy, but it's possible, and a combined
effort between British and US military forces recently proved
it. Under a cool breeze and bright afternoon sky, members
of the British 28 (Air Corps) Squadron used a Merlin helicopter
to first transport members of a US Battle Group (BG) to Manjaca
Range and then lift a Humvee in a nerve-wracking but successful
first-time demonstration.

Active Harvest for the Turkish

the Turkish EOD Team in all parts of TU BN TF area of responsibility
(AOR). The success of this particular harvest was in part
due to the participation of the local media, from newspapers,
TV and radio.

DPREs appreciate Turkish Generosity

Turkish Battalion Task Force Commander LTC. Mehmet Karadayi
visited all the Displaced Persons and Refugee (DPRE) camps
in Zenica on 11 September 2003. The intention was to reinforce
the atmosphere of trust between SFOR, and the DPREs, to ensure
that they were aware that they are fully supported by SFOR.

Reforming demining in BiH

The demining troops of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina
(AF of BiH) are living in exciting and interesting times as
proposals for a restructured and integrated demining unit
are presented. The OSCE is also involved in bringing both
Civil Protection and military deminers together through the
simulation of a natural disaster in Exercise Disaster
Relief.

SFOR rids Bosanski Brod of dangerous
bombs

|
Unexploded ordnance is a terribly legacy of war that poses
an unpredictable hazard to human life. This past Sunday, the
threat posed by two Second World War 500-pound bombs that
lay slightly submerged beneath the Sava River running through
Bosanski Brod was eliminated due to the efforts of local citizens
and authorities, the soldiers of the Multinational Battle
Group (MNBG) from SFOR's Multinational Brigade-North and a
French Underwater Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team's
combined efforts.

Operational Rehearsal Dynamic Response

From the 26th August to 24th September 2003, NATO and Partner
nations deployed Reserve Forces headquarters and troops to
Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo as part of Operational Rehearsal,
Dynamic Response 2003 (DR03). This annual rehearsal, demonstrates
NATO's ability, to significantly reinforce its in-theatre
forces at short notice.

A shooting challenge in Macipolje

On 12th September, as part of the celebration of St. Michel's
day, (patron of the French paratroops), a competition was
held in Multi-National Brigade South East (MNB-SE). From a
simple idea of a shooting challenge among the units of MNB-SE
it was decided to involve the VF and the VRS in the challenge.

A fine harvest for the Ghurkas
|

Since SFOR kicked off a robust campaign a few weeks ago to
further the Operation HARVEST objective of retrieving illegal
and unwanted weapons and ordinance, no other unit has had
quite the level of success as A Company (A Coy) of the Royal
Ghurkha Regiment, part of the UK Battle Group that has been
operating north of Prijedor.

Portuguese engineers on the road
to normality

Late evening on the 1st September in the presence of Gracanica's
Mayor and Portuguese soldiers of Task Force (TF) Golf, a small
ceremony was held to mark the restoration of the road at Skipovac.
After three weeks work the road was once more serviceable
for the local people.

A burning issue

dumps scattered all over the country. On 9th September 2003
such a garbage dump near the town of Kijevo, on the route
between Sarajevo and Trnovo, caught fire.

The month of fire
|

The personnel of the Forward Storage Site (FSS) Glamoc will
remember August 2003 as the month of fire. With the drought
continuing in the Balkans, conditions were ideal for fires.
It all started on the 10th August when a Canadian unit was
firing on the Resolute Barbara Range (RBR) part of the Glamoc
range.

Bosnians join the British Army
|
|
|
A select group of men and women from Bosnia and Herzegovina
(BiH) have joined the British Army - at least on a temporary
basis! Promoted over a period of weeks on local radio and
press, The Highlanders invited local people to come and live
with SFOR. Over two days of gruelling tests, designed to promote
leadership, teamwork the participants got a sense of what
the average British soldier does for a living.
