Arms Factory Inspection

 

To sustain peace and stability it is vital to monitor, control and supervise all the weapons of the Armed Forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina (AF in BiH). The Multinational Sites Control Unit (MSCU) performs this essential task and in July the task force . The unit carried out an exhaustive inspection in a large facility in Hadzici.

Impressive Harvest for the Portuguese

 

From May 21st to 29th, the 1st Portuguese Airborne Battalion located in Doboj conducted an Active Harvest operation in its area of responsibility (AoR). It was focused in on a number of opstimas: Doboj, Dernevnta Gracanica, Doboj Istok, Petrovo, Lukavac and Srpski Brod. The Active Harvest is an ongoing process to provide a safe and secure environment in BiH.

"Joint Anchor"

 

SFOR trucks loaded with explosives were involved in a major road traffic accident (RTA)! So began exercise "Joint Anchor" on 23rd July, 2003, in the area of Stolac, involving Multinational Brigade Southeast (MNB-SE), together with the Entity Armed forces (VF) and Entity services of BiH (local police). The exercise tested emergency procedures and the co-ordination between the various elements participating in Contingence Plan Esculape.

MSU go under the knife

 

Thanks to the good will and knowledge of Captain Doctor Alessandro Rauccio and his team, more than 300 people, had the benefit of first class medical treatment. Members of the MSU, Italian soldiers from other military units, and local employees, solved their problems with skin growths and bed scars on their hands or ears, which had irritated them for years.

Everyone is a winner in this raffle

 

A joint harvest effort between local media, businesses, civil officials and Stabilization Force 13 culminated in a rich reward of weapons turned in by the citizens of Bosnia-Herzegovina to U.S. soldiers. Each person who turned in a piece of munition was provided a raffle ticket and the chance to win one of several daily prizes, that included amongst other items; free dinners, a 35 mm camera, a free month's membership at a private fitness center, and the grand prize, a brand new Volkswagen Polo.

Agricultural aid for local inhabitants

 

Recently the Finnish Civil Military Co-operation (CIMIC) Company finished a project, which will help the sustainable return of Displaced Persons and Refugees (DPREs) in the Kamenica Gornja in Zvornik municipality. The project included the delivery of two motor cultivators and much needed accessories for the use of the local inhabitants in their agricultural activities.

Finnish Farewell

 

After 7 years in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) the Finnish soldiers have left for home. On July 14, 2003 at Tuzla Eagle Base a farewell ceremony took place officially marking the withdrawal of Finns from SFOR (Stabilisation Force). This was a culmination of a process that started in December 2002, and will be complete by August 30th, 2003.

The battle for the hearts and minds of the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina is led by the Psychological Support Branch (PSB) located in Sarajevo on Camp Butmir. Take a look at what they do to support the SFOR soldiers on the ground, from the capture of PIFWCs to Operation Harvests.

A shooting challenge

 

The French/Spanish Battle Group organised a Shooting Patrols Challenge on the 27th of June at the firing range of Macipolje in the village of Nevesinje. In the middle of a great storm, the 6 patrols ran and shot with enthusiasm while representing their Companies.

Sniper success

 

If it's true that a sniper can stop an entire army, then a Dutch sniper must be an enemy soldier's worst nightmare. In a recent competition, snipers from Canada, France, Netherlands and Spain took part in a three day event held on June 9 - 11 aimed at testing the various skills required to be an effective sniper as well as providing the opportunity for an exchange of information and skills from different countries.

40th Balkan games

 

Visegrad hosted the participants of the 40th Inter-Municipalities Youth Sport Games called MOSI from the 3rd to 6th July 2003. It is the most important meeting of the amateur sportsmen in the Balkans with people coming from all over Bosnia and Herzogovina (BiH), Serbia and Montenegro.

SFOR moves to the "Sanski Beat"

 

The SFOR Band from Camp Maple Leaf in Zgon performed at the Sanski Most Music Festival on 14 July for an all-ages crowd of nearly 500 people. The Canadians came on stage with glow-sticks and footballs for the kids and treated everyone to two great 45-minute sets of music from Johnny Cash to Pink Floyd to Canadian classics like 'Born to be Wild' and 'Taking Care of Business'.

Rubbish Dump or River Dump

 

Why state the obvious? For all the SFOR soldier’s that drive around Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) it's impossible not notice the rubbish dumped down spectacular mountainsides and floating down rivers and streams. Illegal dumping is a serious problem in BiH. But here are some locals who are trying to change that with the help of World Vision.

Tuzla International Airport reopens

 

Tuzla International Airport was officially reopened for private aircraft on April 30 when Brig. Gen. James R. "Ron" Mason, commander of Multinational Brigade (North), and TIA Director, Mustafa Terzic, opened the airport by updating a 1998 agreement between Stabilization Force and the Bosnia and Herzegovina government.

Armed Forces BiH joint training

 

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is taking a bold initiative to bring all entities into Joint Professionalism Training. The first course began on July 1st at the Mostar Cultural Center. It involved units from the 1st Guards Corps VF-H, the 1st Corps VF-B and the 5th Corps VRS.

Underground airfield

 

Approximately six kilometres west of the town of Bihac exists the mysterious Zeljava airfield complex. It cannot be seen from the main road, nor can you see the labyrinth of subterranean offices, hangers and storage areas that exist inside Mount Gola, which dominates the BIHAC skyline.

The BLMF Superstars Strongman Competition, hosted by MNB(NW) HQ, is an event designed to showcase the top strength athletes within SFOR. There are three categories: Men's Heavyweight (85KG and above), Men's Lightweight (under 85KG), and Women's Open.
