Butmir IMP: The Spanish Guardia

Camp Butmir - Throughout its 159 year history, the Spanish
Guardia Civil (SPGC) has carried out lots of different tasks
and activities in Spanish society and recently, in International
missions. During the second fortnight of January, the Greek
Police will relieve the SPGC and take responsibility for the
internal security of HQ SFOR inside Camp Butmir.

End of an era for DETAIR

Sarajevo - An important and complete Transfer of Responsibility
(ToR) took place in Sarajevo at the end of the year. After
ten years of good and faithful service, the SFOR French Air
Detachment (DETAIR) is leaving. By being the only unit to
have stayed so long, its story is linked to that of the country,
and its end means many changes for everybody, civilians and
military.

Italian Alpini Santa

Cajnice - On Dec. 20, the soldiers of the German-Italian
Battle Group provided humanitarian aid for schoolchildren
and the population of Cajnice. This was made possible thanks
to the 'Alpini' of the 2nd Regiment, who bought the gifts
to the children, and due to the initiative undertaken by the
civil population of Cuneo, the Italian town where the 2nd
Regiment is located.

A new start for the Portuguese
|

Visoko - Since Jan. 2000, the Portuguese Battle Group has
been based in Visoko, to the Northwest of Sarajevo. On Dec.
26, it had to move to Doboj, in order to take place at its
new base, for a new mission. As part of the SFOR re-structuring,
the Portuguese Battle Group will now be part of Multinational
Brigade North. It means a new mission, some new responsibilities,
and a new base.

NORDPOL CIMIC: Hope for the winter

Doboj - NORDPOL Battle Group (NPBG) CIMIC Company delivered
supplies to 35 families during December. They supplied stoves,
blankets, firewood, food and other goods. These didn't solve
the problems of the people who had literally nothing, but
any help is welcome.

The same people, seven years on
|

|
Sibenica - Personnel of the Netherlands battle group (NLBG)
can be proud of what has been achieved in Sibenica. Thanks
to them, soldiers from a Bosnian-Croat brigade and a Bosniac
brigade, both belonging to the Federation Army (VF), worked
together to build a road. Every car, and especially the school
bus, will be able to use it, and the two brigades will go
on with working side by side.

MEDCAP in Modrica

Modrica - In Gornja Medida there's an elderly woman, a farmer's
wife, who fell down a flight of stairs last summer and was
seriously injured. Six months later, she is still gritting
her teeth in pain as she moves about her little home. Medical
help is only a few miles away in Gradacac, but she says she
cannot go there because she is a Bosnian-Serb and wants to
go to Brcko.

The Spanish-French Battle Group
runs again

Duzi - From Dec. 26-30 the Spanish-French Battle Group, belonging
to the Multinational Brigade Southeast, deployed all its units
to their Area of Responsibility. The purpose of the exercises
was to establish the different missions assigned to the SPFRBG,
check its readiness and capabilities, familiarise the BG personnel
to their AoR and to show the SFOR units' presence among the
civilian population.

Cleaner environment - safer environment
|

Brcko - One of the basic tasks for the Stabilisation Force
is to contribute to a 'safe and secure environment' for Bosnia
and Herzegovina. Could a safe environment mean, among other
things, a cleaner environment? Some think yes. So did the
CIMIC Team in Camp McGovern, Brcko, when they received a project
proposal on behalf of Environmental Youth Association.

Soldier in the spotlight

Cpl. Martan Feit is a member of the Hungarian contingent
within the Multinational Specialised Unit (MSU) in Camp Butmir.
He was born in 1973 in the town of Szolnok near the river
Tisza, in the eastern part of Hungary. Cpl. Martan began his
service as a contract soldier in 1996. He is a marksman. "I
like the military life and I am a good marksman," he
said.
