Top photographer captures US Armed Forces

 

On October 22, top military and civilian photographers captured 24 hours in the life of U.S. armed forces at sites throughout the United States and across the globe. Bosnia and Herzegovina will also be represented by the work of Air Force Tech. Sgt. Andy Dunaway, US Air Force, Flight Chief of HQ SFOR Combat Camera.

Kosevo Hospital

 

On Nov. 5 a group of SFOR soldiers from Camp Butmir paid a humanitarian aid visit to the paediatric clinic of Kosevo Hospital. The purpose of the visit was to distribute gifts, and much needed supplies to the children. The Oncology Ward at Kosevo Hospital, downtown Sarajevo, has 22 special children that are suffering from terminal cancer and leukaemia.

Joint Patrol around Ugljevik

 

A suspended footbridge hanging over the Janja River connects one camp sectioned off into two areas that is home to troops from 320 Russian soldiers and some of the United States of America. American and the Russian SFOR troops are conducting weekly joint patrols around Ugljevik in north-eastern Tuzla.

The first French-Spanish mandate

 

The Infantry-Cavalry Regiment (Régiment d'infanterie - chars de marine, RICM) took charge of the 18th mandate of the French Battle Group on Sep 24 2002. Now, just a few weeks into their tour, this regiment is facing a new and different challenge: the implementation of a French-Spanish BG, a new experience of multinational co-operation at this level.

Mines Information Co-ordination Cell (MICC)

 

Mines Information Co-ordination Cell (MICC) is a part of HQ SFOR Engineer Branch. It is responsible for ensuring mine database information is up to date, and the printing of mine maps. All reports go to the Mine Action Centre, and then through MICC they are disseminated to all SFOR contingents to enable them to carry out safe operations throughout the country.

Promising debut

 

Among the Netherlands troops based in Suica, right in the middle of the three new opstinas (Livno - Tomislavgrad - Kupres) of the Netherlands Battle Group, some of them are in charge of providing some social patrol. They are still to be an emergency in this part of the country.

Ray of sunlight

 

The SFOR mission in BiH means patrolling among a wide territory in order to guarantee a safe and secure environment. But the presence of soldiers sometimes could be beyond the military activity. That is what Italian Battle Group did with 'Ray of sunlight'. An art exhibition, organized in co-operation with the City of Sarajevo Museum and the International Multireligious and Intercultural Centre.

Water of life

 

The main characteristic of Operational Reserve (OPRES) is to adapt itself at any sort of mission SFOR could have. The Portuguese soldiers based in Visoko proved one more time that they were able to take some responsibility as different as possible. In a little village next to their base, they are hollowing out some caves to brought current water in the houses.

Active Harvest: Between wishes and hope

 

Nordic-Polish Battle Group (NORDPOL BG) has been conducting the Active Harvest operation in Derventa, Doboj, Gracanica, Teslic, Tesnaj, Maglaj and Zepce, within Multinational Division North area of responsibility. This is the first time that SFOR Harvest operations have been conducted within the large cities of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

MND-SE downsizing

 

Recently two ceremonies took place within Multinational Division Southeast. Firstly, at Mostar Europe Base, the divisional Spanish Engineers Unit was officially disbanded. Later that day, in Duzi, near Trebinje (Republika Srpska), the Spanish Marines Unit also marked the official end to their deployment in BiH.

Downsizing and reshaping: a sign of progress

 

Every organisation needs to evolve and this has always been the case for SFOR. In line with the progress made by Bosnia and Herzegovina, SFOR has reshaped several times since December 1996 changing internal organisation, areas of responsibility and force levels.

Soldier in the spotlight

 

If you go to Bugojno, and pay attention to the SFOR personnel you meet, you may encounter somebody unique. Sgt. Maj. Adriana Veliscoiu from the Romanian army is small lady who is also unusual in some other ways. First of all, she's the only woman in the Romanian platoon working with the Netherlands Battle Group.
