OHR Military Cell

Sarajevo - The Office of the High Representative (OHR) in
Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has a full military department.
This is the Military Cell and it is made up of service members
of several countries, which include Austria, Canada, France,
Germany, Slovenia, Spain, UK and USA.

Patrol in service of returnees
|

Doboj - Three light vehicles from C squadron of the III Jutland
Regiment of Denmark leave camp Dannevirke to carry out a patrol
in their Area of Responsibility. On board of the cars, the
men of a tank Platoon, their interpreter for this mission
and a medic team. The party of Danish dragoons is off to show
the SFOR's flag in remote areas.

Female Italian Alpine troops in
Rogatica
|

|
Rogatica - For the first time, the Italian Army deployed
female soldiers within a combat unit in a mission through
Bosnia and Herzegovina. There are twelve new soldiers in the
14th Alpine Regiment, the main component of the Italian Battle
Group. These twelve 'riflewomen' (to use a very formal word)
are in Rogatica with the 72nd Coy.

Happy Turks

Zenica - In Zenica where the Turkish Battalion is based,
Saturday afternoon saw a national event when Turkey fought
for a third place in the World Cup against the republic of
South Korea, many Turkish soldiers followed and supported
their team. Turkey scored two goals within the first moments
of the game.

Patrolling the Montenegrin border

Filipovici - The German Battle Group deploys one of its companies
in Filipovici. That small village lies along the Drina River
in the Republika Srpska, just 5km north of Foca.
They patrol the East side of the Area of Responsibility of
the GEBG at the border with Montenegro with their Fuchs and
their Wolf.

A short glance on Derventa

Derventa - Werner Blatter, Chief of Mission of the United
Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Bosnia and Herzegovina,
and Maj. Gen. François de Goësbriant, Deputy Commander
SFOR, jointly visited Derventa municipality on June, 20th.
The event included a meeting followed by visits to the villages
of Plehan and Velika.

Tropic Lighting Strikes Glamoc

Glamoc - Task Force 1st Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment
(The Bandits) provides two important elements of SFOR, the
first is as an Aviation Manoeuvre Asset as part of Multinational
Division North and the second is the provision of an Operational
Air Reserve to Commander SFOR.

Multinationality works in Sipovo hospital

Sipovo - The 44 member medical team at Sipovo consists of
British, Canadian and Dutch, plus one Icelandic nurse. They
all work on the wards, outpatients and in the Incident Command
Post. They are responsible to provide care to approximately
4,500 troops within Multinational Division Southwest.

A Field of Dreams Becomes Reality

Buci - A detachment of six combat engineers with the Portuguese
Battalion based out of Visoko, are hard at work constructing
a sports playing field for the children from the town of Buci.
The project began in early June and is scheduled to be completed
at the end of June. The field is located behind Alija Nametak
Elementary School.

Butmir's golf ball

Butmir - There is an architectural feature that catches the
eyes of the curious when visiting or working in Camp Butmir.
It simply looks like a huge golf ball. However, it really
is a Transportable Satellite Ground Terminal (TSGT), a very
useful device for SFOR.

Scarlet Sunset

Sarajevo - The 23 men and woman of The Band of the Royal
Corps of Signals, originally formed in the UK Army in 1920,
have undertaken a seven-day tour of SFOR camps within Bosnia
and Herzegovina. The setting sun provided a striking backdrop
for them as they performed a 'Sounding of Retreat' June 15th
in Sarajevo downtown.

Rajlovac - To the casual observer, Sunday, June 30th seemed
like any other day, but in Rajlovac Base this particular Sunday
was different. As the hour of 1 p.m. fast approached, offices,
working areas and paths emptied of German soldiers except
for those unlucky enough to be chosen for essential tasks
or duties.

SBS keeps close watch on smuggling

Doljani - A car filled with what appears to be a family slowly
pulls up to the Border Entry Point of Doljani. For Mirza Delic,
commander of the Border Entry Point, tackling the issue of
illegal immigration is critical, but so are the problems of
smuggling and customs fraud, challenges that members of the
SBS face everyday.

Soldiers in the spotlight

A group from the Headquarters SFOR CJ3 (operations) shop
have shown that teamwork fosters a successful office as well
successful friends. Calling themselves GTI, which stands for
Greek, Turkish and Italian, meet Greek Capt. Alexandros Letsas,
Turkish Capt. Hilmi Tekinsoy and Italian Capt. Francesco Santucci.
