Camp Butmir - A packed crowd of soldiers from around the
globe gathered at the Camp Butmir gym May 21, for the chance
to watch members of the U.S. basketball team, the Denver Nuggets,
as they travel across Europe on a morale tour in support of
military troops stationed far from home.

Aid to Stolac's school
|

Stolac - A beautiful city on the banks of the Bregava River,
and home to the Civil-Military Co-operation (CIMIC) team of
the Spanish Battle Group (SPBG). The group delivered more
than 32,000 pieces of stationery and other materials to the
elementary school in Stolac last week. Half the children of
this school are Bosniac, the other half are Bosnian-Croat.

Canadian soldiers provide special
escort duty

Bihac - On May 28, soldiers from C Company, of the 2e R22e
R 'The Vandoos', were tasked with an unusual duty. The special
job was to escort participants of the Landrover Britain to
Bosnia Rally from the Croatian border at Izacic, to the Canadian
base in Bihac.

FOB Connor: Reaching Out

Bratunac - Camp Connor sits atop a small hill, on a ridge
that overlooks several valleys in Eastern Republika Srpska.
With its metal gates, and featureless concrete walls it dominates
the area like an old Wild West fort. On May 20, American soldiers
conducted a patrol in the Bratunac area.

Romeo Zero Alpha

Vlasic - Mist has brought visibility down to 40 metres; strong
winds blow rain horizontally across the road that coils high
into the Vlasic Mountains. Here, the men and woman of the
Dutch 43-Armoured Brigade Recce Team, operate Romeo Zero Alpha,
a radio rebroadcast station that ensures communication between
units working in the area.

The UK Tank Transport Detachment

Sipovo - Recently, the AS90s of the Royal Horse Artillery
(RHA) were in Glamoc for the Balkan Gunner exercise (See SFOR
Informer No. 139). Everyone wondered how these armoured vehicles
travelled. Based along with the RHA in Sipovo, is a small
detachment from 8 Transport Regiment.

Football World Cup 2002

Rajlovac - The Football World Cup 2002 has already started
with 16 countries of SFOR involved in the competition. Soldiers
from Argentina, Belgium, Denmark, England, France, Germany,
Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, Spain,
Sweden, Turkey and the USA will support their favourite teams.

Sarajevo International Airport site
of Red Wings exercise

Sarajevo - Planes crashing, fires burning, casualties being
treated for injuries. A flurry of activity landed on the Sarajevo
International Airport Monday morning, May 27, as a Red Wings
Exercise was implemented by the French Air Detachment as they
helped train and co-ordinate civilian emergency workers responding
to the crash of a military aircraft.

of the Roman Empire. But 11 years ago, on June 26, 1991, the
country declared its independence. It was the first one from
the former Yugoslavia to do so. "Insofar, we are a very

Escort training at the MSU

Camp Butmir - Learning to protect Very Important Persons
(VIPs) while they are out and about requires careful skill
and training. On Tuesday, May 28, Italian and Hungarian soldiers
took part in an exercise at the Multinational Specialised
Unit (MSU), where they learned the correct way to respond
to a threat while escorting a VIP.

Moroccan Exercise Taza

Nevesinje -The Moroccan contingent (MC), that is part of
Multinational Division South East (MND SE), usually provides
security for Camp Ortijes, MND SE Headquarters, and the French
Battle Group's camp. On May 2-4, instead of performing their
traditional jobs they carried out an exercise involving helicopters
to practice their role as a divisional reserve.

A new High Representative for BiH

Sarajevo - On May 25, British, Paddy Ashdown, replaced Austrian,
Wolfgang Petritsch, as High Representative (HR), in Bosnia
and Herzegovina. Ashdown is the fourth HR to be appointed
by the International Community for this post after Swedish,
Carl Bildt, Spanish, Carlos Westendorp and Petritsch.

Sven Fredericksen new IPTF Commissioner
|

Sarajevo - Another individual from the six "Principals"
was also replaced at the end of May. Danish Sven Frederiksen
took over from French Gendarmerie Brigadier, Vincent Coeurderoy
as International Police Task Force (IPTF) Commissioner. IPTF
will become the European Union Police Mission at the end of
2002.

This is a command vehicle for his reconnaissance squadron
