Transfer of command
 

Butmir - Members of the SFOR community gathered Feb. 20 in front of the headquarters building to culminate the transfer of SFOR command from SHAPE to AF South. SFOR Commander Lt. Gen. Michael Dodson was on hand to give comments during the ceremony.

2000 brings increase in displaced persons and refugees returns
 

Five years after the signing of the General Framework Agreement for Peace (GFAP), significant progress has been made regarding the return of displaced persons and refugees. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), along with SFOR and several other international organisations, played a large role in accomplishing this.

Controlling the sky's of Mostar
 

Mostar - Mostar airfield has about 10 000 aircraft movements a year. 95 percent of these are by helicopters, and only five percent by civilian and military aeroplanes. There are 11 men, all French, working here. One commander, six Air Traffic Controllers, three meteorologists, and one information-worker.

The test of strength
 

Vojkovici - The floods in late December and early January had its impact on structures throughout the Theatre. One of those structures, the road-bridge in Vojkovici, finally gave up after having fought and lost against water. But the bridge had not given up all its strength. It put up quite a fight when SFOR engineers arrived to tear the rest down.

Destroying tools of destruction
 

Travnik - Three years ago, the Netherlands and Romania signed a Memorandum of Understanding including Dutch support to the Romanian Army to develop their own EOD-branch within their engineers. A vital part of the live training goes on in SFOR, combining needy education with making BiH safer.

Laser simulator at Eagle base
 

Tuzla - Opened the Feb. 9, the first shooting laser simulator in the Balkans has just been installed at Eagle Base by the US Army Training Command. Real weapons were modified so that they can shoot a laser beam that hits a target on a screen. Under the stage, a projector casts the chosen scenario and a camera detects the laser shots.

A four-star field hospital
 

Sipovo - The integrated medical unit hospital has a ten bed capacity, which can be increased by twenty additional if needed. Among the 46 employees of that multinational medical unit, there are two surgeons, two anaesthetists, one emergency doctor, one physician, nine nurses and specialists operating in the radiology and orthopaedic fields.

Bugojno KSC rises from its ashes
 

Bugojno - When the Dutch Battle Group arrived in Bugojno in the beginning of 1999, they were looking for projects within the MOS (Dutch acronym for Military Development Co-operation) framework. The then Minister of Development and Co-operation started providing it with money to develop projects in this area.

Doboj - The Tactical Operations Centre (TOC) of Nordpol Battlegroup is unique - one of its kind. This TOC carries out at a battlegroup level what is usually done at a divisional level : co-ordinate joint combined forces from distinctive countries. Mostar - With a battle group consisting of 264 vehicles and moving engines, much stands or falls on the few soldiers with the mission of maintaining them. The Spanish Battle Group workshop in Mostar is not a workspace for the lazy. Daily, more than ten vehicles roll in and out, everyone depending on skilled mechanics.

The roots of the future
 

Zenica - It is a small, cute corner of greenery where the river Vranducka meanders, flooded with the already springy sunlight of a beautiful Sunday in March. A tree-planting ceremony was held there on March the 4th. Turkish soldiers and school children have been in charge of the plantations, in the presence of many VIPs.

Fijians in the 2PWRR
 

Mrkonjic Grad. - There are 32 Fijian soldiers currently serving with the 2nd Battalion, The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment. During the next six months, another batch of approximately 20 are being taken through the training cycle and are expected to be joining the regiment soon after.

Reducing stress while deployed
 

Soldiers and civilians from countries all over the world are in BiH in support of the SFOR mission. This requires individuals to be away from their families anywhere from three to 12 months, sometimes longer. Certain measures should be taken to ensure that personnel return to their homes in the same - if not better - condition than when they arrived.

Soldier in the Spotlight
 

"Building bridges or roads is quite the same in Italy or in BiH," said Lt. Col. Giuseppe Manzari, from the Italian CIMIC Unit. He roars with laughter and doesn't hesitate to qualify his five-month tour as one of the best professional experiences in his life. "We had to adapt to local techniques and materials. It was very exciting."
