Brigadier M P Dodson MBE (Mark) late HLDRS

A third generation Army Officer, he commissioned into the Gordon Highlanders in 1978 and served with them in Chester, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Belize and as Regimental Signals Officer and then Adjutant, in 6 Airmobile Brigade in Germany. Prior to attending the Army Staff Course at Camberley in 1991 he commanded a company in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Kenya.

After Camberley he was Deputy Chief of Staff 12 Armoured Brigade and then 4 Armoured Brigade when the 2 brigades merged under Options for Change. He completed this post on Op GRAPPLE 3 in Bosnia for which he was awarded the MBE. Returning to his Battalion in 1994 he commanded a rifle company in Edinburgh and then in South Armagh and Londonderry. His second SO2 appointment was Military Assistant to Commander British Forces Hong Kong in the lead up to handover to China.

He returned to the UK on promotion and spent a brief spell as SO1 in Permanent Joint Headquarters J5 Plans before taking command of the 1st Battalion The Highlanders, a mechanized infantry battalion, in Catterick in January 1998. Milestones in command included overseas exercises in the USA and Canada, a TESX and a Northern Ireland tour. Post command he was Military Assistant to the Adjutant General for 20 months before moving on promotion to Colonel MS (A) at the Army Personnel Center in February 2002. He was promoted to Brigadier and assumed command of Multi-National Task Force (North West) in Bosnia and Herzegovina on 1 st September 2004. His next appointment will be Depute Commander London District in March 2005.

A keen sportsman he still plays cricket, golf, tennis and squash. He is also the father of 4 children, 3 of whom will be in boarding school in Scotland by September this year. He is a member of the Royal Company of Archers, The Queens Bodyguard in Scotland. Cultural interests include collecting pictures and opera.
