Major General Rick J. Hillier

Major General Rick Hillier completed his studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science Degree and, after basic armour training in 1976, was posted to the 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise's) in Petawawa, Ontario, followed in 1979 by a posting to the Royal Canadian Dragoons in Lahr, Germany. In 1980, he attended the United States Army Armour Officer Advanced Course in Fort Knox, Kentucky and subsequently moved to the Combat Training Centre's Armour School in Gagetown, New Brunswick. In 1983, he returned to the Royal Canadian Dragoons in Germany, serving as Squadron Battle Captain and, upon promotion to Major in 1985, as Tank Squadron commander.

In 1987, Major General Hillier attended French language training in Ottawa and, in 1988, the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College in Toronto. Upon promotion to Lieutenant Colonel in 1989, he was posted to Land Force Command Headquarters before taking command of the Royal Canadian Dragoons in Petawawa in 1990. On completion of his command tour, Major General Hillier was posted to National Defence Headquarters (NDHQ), Ottawa, and employed first as the Executive Assistant to the Associate Assistant Deputy Minister (Personnel), then Executive Assistant to the Vice Chief of Defence Staff and, following promotion to Colonel in 1994, as the Director NDHQ Secretariat. He was posted to the United Nations Peace Force in the former Yugoslavia in 1995 as the Chief of operations (G3), subsequently transferred in 1996 to 2- Canadian Multi-National Brigade Group, Implementation Force, is Bosnia and then to the 2nd Canadian Mechanised Brigade Group, Petawawa, upon his promotion to Brigadier General in July 1996. He was appointed the Assistant Deputy Commanding General of III Corps and Fort Hood in July 1998 and promoted to his present rank in March 1999. In July 1999, Major General Hillier assumed command of the III Corps and Fort Hood Deputy Commanding General.

Major General Hillier assumed his current position as Commander Multi-National Division (Southwest) in Bosnia, in September 2000.
