| The Virtual Silk Highway |

The largest investment in a single project supported by the NATO Programme for Security through Science - The Virtual Silk Highway project is a satellite-based network that provides Internet access to scientists and researchers in the countries of the Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia) and Central Asia (Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan).

| The Environment and Security |

Although the causes of conflict and insecurity are often complex, evidence suggests that environmental degradation and resources depletion are a source of tension in many regions of the world. Every year, the Security through Science Programme supports numerous environmental security projects related to issues such as water management, seismic risk, different forms of pollution, disposal of radiological waste and other potential hazards.

| Earthquake-induced disasters: limiting the damage |

Following the 1999 earthquakes in Turkey, several Science for Peace (SfP) projects in the framework of the Security through Science Programme have been launched in the areas of earthquake engineering and seismology.

| Water - a key security asset |

The NATO Programme for Security through Science facilitates a variety of projects that are directly related to water issues since they are considered of critical importance in today's security environment. Flooding, droughts, as well as the management or protection of infrastructure for water supplies are examples of the types of projects that NATO supports.
