Russian Task Force Prepares for Counter Piracy Operations

NRC COUNTER PIRACY TRAINING 01

A task force from the Russian Navy’s North Sea Fleet, led by the anti-submarine warfare ship RS Severomorsk made a call in the port of Souda Crete, between the 14th and 17th of January. During the stop-over, officers and marines from the task force took part in supplementary training at the NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre. The course was designed to allow an exchange of lessons learned between Russian and NATO personnel, as well as to increase interoperability, focusing on Counter-Piracy Operations and Merchant vessel protection. The RS Severomorsk will now head to the Horn of Africa to take part in Counter-Piracy operations following the training.

NATO experts presented briefings to the officers of the Command team on anti-piracy procedures aboard merchant vessels, and on the interdiction and inspection of suspect vessels. Boarding Teams made up of Naval Infantry Marines participated in practical exercises. The NRC Counter-Piracy Glossary produced by the NRC Expert Group on Terminology, and published on the NRC website in December 2012 was used extensively during the 3-day training event. The glossary provides translations of vital terms from Russian into English, increasing the efficacy of cooperation on Counter-Piracy. This demonstrates the importance of linguistic work done through the NRC to facilitate and improve communication and practical cooperation in areas of common interest, here to protect shipping traffic off the coast of Africa.

Previously similar supplementary training events have taken place at the NMIOTC in 2011 and 2012. These successful training courses play an important role in increasing interoperability among NRC Nations who have contributed to counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden.
