Represented by international members from 13 nations (Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Turkey and the United States), the NATO Airborne Early Warning Force E-3A Component - also known as NATO AWACS - is located at Geilenkirchen, Germany.

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of NATO, the Component held a design contest for an anniversary aircraft. The design includes the 19 members of NATO, the 50th Anniversary NATO logo and the E-3A Shield. The design was completed and painted by DaimlerChrysler Aerospace on E-3A aircraft LX-N 90442.

The anniversary aircraft will be used as a static display at national and international airshows until May 2000.

It flew operationally during Operation Allied Force.
