Operational Update: Afghan-International Security Force Detains Militants in Khowst; ISAF Members Killed in Southern Afghanistan

Militants Detained

KABUL, Afghanistan - An Afghan and international security force detained six suspected militants today, after searching a complex of small structures in Khowst province known to be used by a Haqqani Network facilitator and a small group of Haqqani militants.

The suspected militants are responsible for anti-government media production, logistical operations and financial transactions in support of militant attacks within the region.

The joint security force searched structures in Nadir Shah Kot district. No shots were fired, and no Afghan civilians or joint force members were injured.

The Haqqani Network has developed an extensive web of supply routes in eastern Afghanistan used to issue weapons and communicate its ideology to militant elements within the country. Afghan and international security forces are continuously working together to block these routes and ensure civilian safety and the legitimate governance of the Afghan people.

ISAF Casualties

Two International Security Assistance Force service members were killed and three died of wounds in three separate events in southern Afghanistan, Sept. 24. Two members were killed and one died from wounds as a result of an improvised explosive device detonation. One service member died of gunshot wounds from an insurgent attack, and one service member died of wounds sustained in an insurgent attack while on patrol.

Capt. Regina Gillis, a U.S. spokesperson, confirmed that all of the deceased service members are from the United States. ISAF is a key component of the international community's engagement in Afghanistan, assisting the Afghan authorities in providing security and stability and creating the conditions for reconstruction and development.
