ISAF kills senior Taliban in Helmand

KABUL, Afghanistan - International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) killed a dangerous Taliban insurgent in Helmand province, on 1 June.

Mullah Mansur is believed to have planned several suicide attacks targeting Afghan security forces and ISAF troops in Lashkar Gah. He was also believed to be responsible for constructing and placing Improvised Explosive Devices throughout Helmand.

Mansur’s involvement is suspected in two incidents last month in Gereshk that killed two ISAF soldiers and 13 Afghans, including Afghan National Police (ANP) officers and civilians. The attacks also wounded 27 other innocent people.

Mansur is also believed to have facilitated a recent suicide bomber attack on Helmand Police Headquarters. This incident killed nine ANP and two civilians, while also wounding 28 other innocent Afghans.

This particularly dangerous insurgent was killed on Monday, 1 June in an isolated area near Nahr e Saraj, north east of Lashkar Gah.

The ISAF operation that targeted Mansur is also believed to have killed and injured a number of other insurgents.

Mansur associated with insurgents from the Baluch tribe in southern Afghanistan, and he acted as an intermediary between insurgents in the south and central Helmand.

Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson, Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: “ISAF conducted a successful precision strike against one of the most dangerous men in Helmand, and what we consider to be the most dangerous man in the central area around Lashkar Gah.

Mullah Mansur’s illegal activities included the supply and construction of Improvised Explosive Devices, and the planning of IED attacks in an area stretching from Lashkar Gah to Gereshk.

The attacks he helped plan and execute have probably killed or wounded hundreds of people, and most of them have been either Afghan civilians or police.

This operation was the culmination of months of intelligence gathering, and the strike itself was carefully coordinated and checked to ensure there were no civilians in the area.

The death of Mullah Mansur…signals another serious blow to the insurgency.”

Helmand Security Chief, Colonel Assadullah Sherzad, said: “Our duty is the maintenance of security for the people of Helmand and to clear a path to progress.

These operations will continue so that people like Mansur, who throw obstacles in our path, are removed.”

The death of Mansur follows that of another senior insurgent, Mullah Malik, who was recently killed in Nawa, south of Lashkar Gah.

Malik is believed to have planned and facilitated several suicide bomber attacks in Lashkar Gah.

The death of Mansur also coincided with a major operation targeting the Taliban in northern Helmand. This operation pushed the Taliban further from villages near the town of Musa Qal’eh.

Insurgents such as Mansur and Malik, through their suicide bombing and IED activities, ignored the safety and security of all Afghans.

However, ISAF and Afghan security forces remain committed to providing a brighter future for all the people of Afghanistan.
