Three Afghans killed in escalation of force incident

KABUL, Afghanistan – Three Afghans were killed in the Sayed Abad District of Wardak province this morning during an ‘escalation of force’ incident.

A dismounted ISAF patrol observed a bus veering towards their patrol on the Kabul to Kandahar highway.  The patrol fired warning shots, and after the bus failed to stop, shots were fired into the engine block.

Despite this, the bus continued towards the patrol. As a result the patrol was forced to fire upon the bus in self-defence. Three passengers in the bus were killed as a result.

The patrol then began treating the wounded on site and coalition aircraft later evacuated wounded to ISAF and coalition hospitals.

The Wardak governor and other governmental officials were notified about the incident by the senior ISAF commander for that area.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing; further details regarding events immediately after this incident are emerging. More information may be released by this office as it becomes available.
