KABUL, Afghanistan — More than 550-kilograms of rice was distributed to residents of a local refugee camp located in the northern outskirts of Kabul on Dec. 6.

U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Yevsey Goldberg, a doctor deployed with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and a founding member of the Volunteer Community Relations and Resources (VCRR) group, distributed the rice with help of ISAF Country Advisor David Fazel.

Goldberg personally donated nearly half the $500 it cost to purchase the rice from a local merchant. The rest of the money came from several members of VCRR.

“It’s all part of my love for the people of this country,” Goldberg said. “These people have so little, it’s good to give them something, especially with the winter coming.”

“We have no choice but to stay here,” said Abdul Razak, a representative at the refugee camp that accepted the rice donation to give to families. “We are constantly moving, and settle where we can.”

According to Razak, the land he and other refugees currently occupy belongs to the Afghanistan Ministry of Defence. They have permission to reside on the land through the winter, where tents have been provided for families, but in March, they will be moving on.

Razak said he doesn’t know what will happen in March, but for now, he’s happy to accept small acts of kindness like the rice donation.

“We asked for help and received some,” Razak said, referring to the Afghan Government’s donation of roofing material for their tents in October. “We take anything we can get and thank people for their kindness.”
