ISAF Commander earns Romanian Medal of Honour at National Day of Romania Ceremony

KABUL, Afghanistan - Romanian troops deployed to International Security Assistance Force Headquarters gathered in front of the ISAF’s main building to celebrate the 90th National Day of Romania Dec. 1. At the ceremony, Commander of ISAF, General David McKiernan, was presented with the Romanian Medal of Honour on behalf of the nation’s Ministry of Defence.

Also receiving an award was ISAF Chief of Staff, German Major General Hans-Lothar Domröse, who was presented with the General Staff Medal of Honour.

Offering his thanks to the crowd, General McKiernan said he was proud of the partnership between Romania and the international community.

“We have such a close bond,” he said. “We thank Romania for its friendship and for serving alongside us in these campaigns that bring freedom to not only to Afghanistan, but to all suffering countries. I’m proud of that friendship.”

The presentation was followed by the Romanian National Anthem, and a ceremonial laying of wreaths before the ISAF memorial and the Romanian flag.
