Two Tornado aircraft arrive at Mazar-E Sharif air base

KABUL, Afghanistan — Two Tornado fighter reconnaissance aircraft from the 6th Wing, Ghedi, Italy, recently arrived at Mazar-e Sharif Airfield, in Balkh province.

Brigadier General Paolo Serra, Regional Command-West commander, and Colonel Francesco Vestito, Joint Air Task Forces Commander, were present for the arrival of the aircraft.

The two aircraft will join the local task group and begin the first phase of providing local reconnaissance assets. Meanwhile, logistics preparations are underway to adapt the runway at the Herat airfield for the use of the new aircraft.

This new unit will actively support ISAF forces that are working toward furthering security, reconstruction and governance of Afghanistan.
