People of Lashkar Gah embrace ISAF soldiers

KABUL, Afghanistan - While their colleagues from 42nd Commando are conducting operations in neighbouring provinces, the soldiers of J Company are winning hearts and minds in the capital of Helmand.

J Company is the Lashkar Gah Operations Company and regularly conducts patrols in and around the city, a job that often brings them close to the local population. They are not alone in this task, and as with every aspect of operations in the province, Afghan National Security Forces are involved.

“We’re here to provide security that will allow reconstruction and development and governance to expand for the benefit of the local population,” said Major Simon Turner, J Company commander. “However it’s important to remember why we’re here, which is to help the Afghan security forces to eventually take over these functions themselves. The local population needs to see their own people taking control, and it also helps us to break down any barriers that may be the result of language or cultural issues."

These patrols can provide insight into the general mood of the local population as well as provide reassurance that the city provides safety from the conflict occurring throughout the province.

“The populace of Lashkar Gah are generally very supportive of what we are trying to achieve, and considering the enthusiastic response to their patrolling activities, I have little doubt that in six months all ranks within J Company will be able to look back and see the positive contribution their efforts, as ISAF soldiers, have made to the local community.”

J Company will continue to patrol the streets of Lashkar Gah, providing the security and stability required to allow the Afghan people to live in a community that allows them to progress and develop their way of life.
