Southern region Governors meet in Kandahar City

KANDAHAR CITY, Afghanistan—Key members of the Southern Region conference on their way to the governors’ palace.

KABUL, Afghanistan – The Independent Directorate of Local Government (IDLG) held a Conference in Kandahar City August 23 between key Afghan Government Ministers and four governors of the Southern region.

This conference was hosted by the new Governor of Kandahar, Rahmatollah Raufi, at the Governor’s Palace. Governor Mohammed Ghulab Mangal of Helmand province; Governor Asadullah Hamdam of Uruzgan province, Governor Delbar Jam Arman Shinwari of Zabul province came together to discuss the challenges and issues they each face in their respective provinces. GIRoA representatives included; the Director General of the Independent Directorate of Local Government, H.E. Jelani Popal, Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, H.E Ehsan Zia, Minister of Education H.E. Mohammed Hanif Atmar and other representatives of central government ministries.

Both the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy to Afghanistan, Mr Kai Eide and the Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), General David McKiernan addressed this high level event.

The parties discussed security, governance and development issues. They agreed to meet again within several weeks to further develop a number of initiatives which will benefit the people of the South.
