Latest military Tri-Lateral meeting makes progress

KABUL, Afghanistan - A Tri-Lateral meeting to discuss mutual security issues was held yesterday between the Chiefs of Staff of the Afghan Army, Pakistan Army and the Commander International Security Force (ISAF).

The meeting between General Besmullah Khan, Chief Of Staff, Afghan Army, General Kayani, Chief of Staff Pakistan Army and General David McKiernan, Commander ISAF, is a step in demonstrating a common approach to the insurgency that is affecting the two neighbouring countries and the fact that the solutions on either side of the border are inextricably linked.

Discussions were reported to be frank and productive. The three generals agreed that ISAF, Afghan Security Forces and the Pakistan Army must work together and eliminate militant sanctuaries.  Of particular significance was the attendance of General Kayani so soon after President Musharraf had resigned in a clear signal of intent on this key regional security issue.

The Generals agreed to hold further talks and to do this on a frequent basis.
