Afghan Minister visits Uruzgan

KABUL, Afghanistan - During a visit to Uruzgan August 16, the Afghan Minister for Rural Rehabilitation and Development, Minister Zia, expressed his concern about the needs of the population, and his gratitude toward ISAF for its support and efforts in Uruzgan province.

This was his second visit to Southern Afghanistan. During his stay the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan representative laid the first brick for a mosque and the provincial offices for his ministry in Tarin Kowt. Later, he also spoke with the Provincial Development Council, composed of local ministry representatives and local Tribal Elders.

Minister Zia promised to sign another 14 contracts in the near future, for the development of Uruzgan.

Minister Zia also met with the Commander of Task Force Uruzgan and civilian representatives where they discussed plans to improve the infrastructure, specifically; water supplies, water management and erosion.

They also discussed the need for security and good governance to work together to establish an appropriate environment for engineering work on infrastructure projects to begin. A civil representative emphasized the crucial importance of a clear appointments policy, transparency in financial matters and positive governance at the district and provincial level in the development of Uruzgan.

ISAF will continue to assist and support the GIRoA to extend its authority across Afghanistan so that it can provide improved security and governance to help the people and increase the legal economic opportunities available to them.
