Spanish PRT gets new commander

RC-West Commander Brig. Gen. F. Arena receives the honours by a Spanish platoon during the change of command ceremony, July 12.

KABUL, Afghanistan — ISAF’s Spanish Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Regional Command West (RC-West) held a change of command ceremony in Qala-e-Naw, Badghis province, on 12 July. Colonel Pedro Perez Garcia handed over command to Colonel Pedro Rolán Araujo.

RC-West Commander Brigadier General Francesco Arena led the ceremony. Brigadier General Ramón Martin-Ambrosio Merino, Parachutist Brigade Commander; Brigadier General Álvaro de la Peña Cuesta, the Chief of Operations of the Army; Ashraf Nasheri, Bagdhis province’s Governor; and several others Afghan representatives also attended the ceremony.

Colonel Perez Garcia remarked that Legioners strongly contributed to the development in Badghis province and wished the best of luck to the new PRT Commander, who had already been in charge eight months previously. The ceremony also signs the passage among the incoming task force, based on the III Bandera de Infanteria Paracaidista, belonging to Parachutist Brigade "Almogávares” and the soldiers of the VII Bandera de Infanteria Legionaria, belonging to Legion Brigade “Rey Alfonso XIII”.

Brigadier General Francesco Arena expressed his enormous satisfaction in having had under his command two of the most prestigious Spanish units, both well known in international environment.
